Chelsea FC head coach Liam Rosenior has hailed captain Reece James as “the best footballer in the world in his position” following the defender’s signing of a new long-term contract with the club.
The 26-year-old academy graduate committed his future to Stamford Bridge until June 2032 with a six-year extension, securing his services during his prime years and aligning his terms with the club’s incentivised wage structure. James’ previous deal was set to expire in 2028.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League fixture, Rosenior expressed his delight at the news, stating: “We’ve secured the best player in world football in his position. I can’t stop smiling about it.”
The head coach praised James’ loyalty and qualities, noting that the captain had “many opportunities” to leave in the past but chose to stay and build his legacy at the club he has represented since the age of six. Rosenior highlighted James’ humility, leadership, and world-class ability, describing the extension as a major boost for the team’s ambitions under his management.
Reece James, who was named club captain in 2023, echoed the positive sentiment, explaining that committing long-term “wasn’t really much of a decision” given his deep connection to Chelsea. He added that he has experienced winning at the club and fully believes in the project’s direction to achieve further success.
